Artist Statement
Addiction is defined as the fact or condition of being addicted to a particular substance, thing, or activity. Addiction is typically associated with drugs and alcohol. When I think of addiction, I associate addiction with food. In recent decades, obesity has become an increasing problem in America, however, in more recent years, there has been an increase in Anorexia, an eating disorder that causes people to obsess about what they eat and how much they weigh.
In my photo, I want to focus on addiction to weight, specifically weight loss. In my photo, a girl is taking measurements of her body with a tape measure that is too short. The concept of body measurements symbolizes the addiction to her weight. The short tape measure symbolizes what she wants her body to look like. In Anorexia, people have a distorted perception of body image and fear of weight gain. To cope with that, they strive to lose weight, which could could serious health problems.
I captured this image by using a Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) to photograph a girl measuring her waist. Then, in post production, I copied the body onto a blank canvas and changed the background to black. The purpose of changing the background color is to make the body the focal point and to eliminate any distractions from the photo.
